Combinations of stone and metal, classical architecture and scientific instrumentation, make the Tall Fluted Sundial from Broderstone a very interesting and impactful ornament.
The fluted column could have been taken from any number of ancient sites, it elegantly supports the armillary's whirling metal rings that represent latitude, longitude, the tropics and other celestial paths.
Cast stone has been used to construct the column that has just the correct amount of ornamentation not to distract from the steelwork that has a arrow shooting through its centre.
An armillary was once used to track the sun, plot the co-ordinates of stars and discover cosmic relationships. Although not considered accurate today, we think you'll agree that its engaging form and arresting visual qualities are still intriguing.
